چکیده

The fluorescent dyes or cellular autofluorescence can be used in studies of cell structure and in physiological measurements. The confocal microscope collects the information from a welldefined optical section; thus, out of focus fluorescence is eliminated, which results in an increase in contrast, clarity and detection of optical objects. Moreover, stacks of optical sections taken at successive focal planes can be reconstructed to produce a three dimensional view of a specimen, and all this can be done in real time. Thus, confocal microscopy provides means to observe structural components and physiological processes of living cells and tissues in threedimensional space without physical sectioning.

Salivary gland bioengineering requires understanding the interaction between salivary epithelium and surrounding tissues. An important component of salivary glands is the presence of neurons. No previous studies have investigated how neurons and salivary epithelial cells interact in an in vitro co-culture model. In this study, we describe the self-organization of neurons around salivary epithel...

Live cell imaging using confocal microscopy induces intracellular calcium transients and cell death.

Isolated chondrocytes stained with fluo 4-AM and visualized using standard confocal microscopy techniques exhibited Ca2- transients and oscillations. Decreasing the power of the laser light decreased the percent-age of cells exhibiting these Ca2+ signals. Treatment with the antioxidant ascorbate reduced the Ca2+ response, suggesting that it was mediated by light-induced release of reactive oxyg...

O-4: The Interaction of Bioactive Glass Nanoparticles with Mesenchymal Stem Cells In Vitro

Background: Bioactive glass (BG) nanoparticles are amongst the most promising class of biomaterials for hard tissue regeneration because of their distinctive properties of rapid bone bonding, controlled biodegradability and their ability to stimulate new bone growth. Despite the vast interest in BG scaffolds in medical applications, the synthesis of bioactive glass nanoparticles is still facing...
